Sopheak and Ali’s story began a couple years ago with Ali. It began with her healing. As Ali says, her life before Sak Saum was without love, cold and lonely. Through Sak Saum, God began to open her heart to loving others and being loved herself. It was in the midst of this process that she met Sopheak. Sopheak is a teacher and worship leader for In His Steps International. Ali was immediately drawn to his kind, loving nature and the seriousness with which he takes his responsibilities. (They are much alike in that way)
For almost two years, Ali was interested in Sopheak but hid her feelings. Sopheak liked another girl, and Ali did not want to cause a problem. So she waited, hoping circumstances might one day change. During that season of waiting, God showed her that she lived with a deep-set distrust of men. He began to heal her, preparing her for what He knew lay ahead.
Love Begins

It was the potatoes that really started to change things. Ginny, Sak Saum’s International Director, asked Ali to try growing sweet potatoes at the Vocational Training Center. Knowing she needed help, Ali asked Sopheak to join her. They began to work together and got to know one another better. Sopheak’s previous relationship had ended and, as he helped Ali, he began to see her in a new light. He helped her prepare her new home and was intentional about helping her move. They started to talk on the phone, often for long stretches at a time. It was clear to them both that love was beginning.
Before Ali committed her heart fully to Sopheak, she wanted to make sure she was following God’s plan and not her own. She spent a great deal of time in prayer, gaining a sense of peace and confidence. This relationship was indeed what God had designed for her.
As their feelings grew, Ali knew she should invite her leadership into the process. Sopheak agreed, and they met with Theavy, Ginny, and Eric to discuss their future.
When asked about Ali, Sopheak answered, “Every time I see Ali, I feel so refreshed. She reminds me of the ladies in waiting in Matthew 25. She encourages me and understands my heart.”
