A few months back the Myanmar Government decreed that all vehicles over a certain age should be taken off the roads and scrapped. Up until then, literally anything (and I mean anything!) that could move was allowed on the roads. Now that the country has emerged from its communist past and sanctions have been lifted, new & previously- used vehicles can be imported and purchased locally. For some years, John (my contact in Myanmar) & his team relied on an old jeep that we built out of salvaged parts. Once that had virtually disintegrated, they sold it and brought a small van which had seen better days before they’d even started to use it. That, too, is rusting away and has to be scrapped by the end of the year. Impossible to use on muddy roads, it has become more and more difficult to transport relief aid, food and Bibles for prisoners & orphanages, as well as printed resources to Bible schools and leaders across the country. As a two wheel drive vehicle, the only way to cover some of the muddy and otherwise impossible roads is to hitch up a team of buffalo.
Some years back, John’s teams helped us to seed some of Messengers books into southern parts of China be it via road, canoe, donkey, bicycle or on foot, in order to get teaching into the hands of the believers. In 2011, John’s teams helped us to print and distribute 10,000 Bait of Satan books in Burmese. This year, the number has almost doubled and they have distributed some 18,000 books in three languages to leaders and emergent leaders across the country. Next year we are already planning some 30,000 books & Resource DVD’s in four languages! As the work grows and our reach spreads so, too, does the dependency on mechanical transport. Many times a truck or four wheel drive vehicle has to be hired to distribute books where the old van simply cannot go and, now that it is being called off the roads, a new vehicle is required.
Through the outreach work of Messenger and a number of committed partners, money was raised these last months, over and above our budgeted seeding and tithe expenses for the year. Just days ago, the old vehicle was taken off the road and a new (previously- used) vehicle was gifted to John’s Love in Action ministry by Messenger International. (The old van had to be ‘taken’ because it had broken down and could not make it to the scrap yard under its own power!) Within a couple of days of them receiving the new Toyota split cab, I began to receive fresh reports and photos of new waves of seeding. The final books for the year will go out before Christmas! Plans for new mission trips involving teams going to places to touch lives and leaders in locations previously avoided are being made!
Many lives will be touched, leaders will be inspired, and ministries encouraged through this wonderful new resource!
Reaching the nations with you!
P.S. Here is a picture of the Toyota truck you gave John and the team.
