Nomi and Sokura first met through Nomi’s involvement in Saang, where Sokura lives and works for IHSI. Sokura is a teacher and worship leader for IHSI. Through Nomi’s involvement with IHSI’s church plant and her participation in staff meetings, Nomi and Sokura began to build a friendship.
Nomi is outgoing, smiles quickly and always has a joke to tell. Sokura is thoughtful, quiet, and kind. It makes sense, then, that Nomi was the first to ask for Sokura’s number. Always quick to make a friend, she wanted to include his contact info with the other staff members. They began calling each other. Over time, they learned more about each other’s personalities and character. They discovered ‐ as is often the case – that opposites attract.
A Relationship Blooms…
Neither Sokura nor Nomi can say for sure when friendship blossomed into love. It was a gradual change…growing slowly over a period of months. Sokura now says that Nomi’s move to Saang when the Vocational Training Center opened was a key factor in their ability to get to know one another better. As they grew closer, they shared more about their lives with each other, even giving each other nicknames. Then, one day, Nomi asked Sokura, “Do you know who I love?” Sokura said he didn’t and was too shy to guess. Nomi replied, “I love Jesus…and I love you.” The feeling was mutual.
They began to pray about their future and believed God was leading them to marry. In many ways, they could see God’s hand preparing them to be together. However, Sokura’s family is not wealthy and they wondered how they might afford a wedding. They tried to save money but it was difficult and slow. Nomi began to think they would get married but would not be able to have a true celebration. She remembers praying, “God‐for just one day in my life- could I have a chance to wear wedding clothes?”
God answered her prayer in an incredible way through Pearl Alliance’s help! As Nomi recently said, “I’m so happy and excited for this amazing opportunity. We are so thankful that God has shown His compassion and concern for us by blessing us with this wedding.”
